Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that individuals who discontinue popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People purchasing these treatments should be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.

The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Doctors believe the way of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the medication report a sudden return of appetite.

"It was like a trigger flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," said an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
